Welcome to the West Downs Search Team website

Brought about by the abduction of Sarah Payne in July 2000, the Search Team was formed after the Neighbourhood Watch approached Sussex Police and asked if they would be willimg to train a rapid response search team.

In December 2000 the Neighbourhood Watch Search Team became operational. This was the first police-trained NHW search team in the country and attracted a lot of attention.

Between the years 2000 and 2004, the team was called out at least fifteen times, which earned the team a Divisional Congratulations award from Sussex Police.

18 members who joined the team at its inception in 2000 were awared a certificate of recognition for 10 years service as a volunteer member of the West Downs NHW Search Team and the support that has been given to Sussex Police between December 2000 to 2010.

In a further recognition of the excellent work done by the team, we recently won the award for Innovation at the National Neighbourhood and Home Watch Awards held on the 18th June 2013.
